Sleep Disorders & Infertility: The Former Increases the Risk of the Other.


Sleep disorders are increasing in both men and women, but a few happen to attend to them. Sleep disorders are changes that occur in one’s sleep schedules or period. For some reasons, a majority tend to overlook them and instead obtain sleeping pills to deal with these sleep disorders, commonly insomnia.     

The latest studies reveal an insight into how sleep disorders other than sleep apnea can increase the risk of infertility in women. Specifically, it has been noted that these sleep disorders, particularly insomnia increase a woman’s infertility risk four times higher than in women who sleep properly during the night.

Sleep Disorders & the Infertility Risk  

Normally, a few women pay attention to sleep disorders because many tend to associate them with stress, workload, and responsibilities. In the past, studies linked insomnia to infertility and with this, a few women became concerned about their sleeping schedules. However, in the current era, more women battle with sleep disorders silently and are more taken for granted.  

The latest study offers new evidence that indicates that women with these sleep disorders need to obtain help and as well mind their habits in case they are trying to conceive.

A Case Study

At least 63 women with an average age of 35 were considered for the study. These ranged from 20 years of age to 45. They were followed for 5 years and it turned out that 29 of them were diagnosed with sleep disorders. These women developed infertility compared to 34 women in another group.

It also turned out that the 29 women were 2.7 times more likely to battle infertility before counting for other medical issues. It was further noted that once other conditions like age and the related medical problems were considered, these women had an increased risk of 3.7 times of developing infertility.

The study also confirmed that women with sleep disorders were at a risk of developing cholesterol problems, high blood pressure, thyroid disease, menstrual problems, anxiety, and depression.

However, researchers failed to identify how these sleep disorders are likely to cause infertility in women.

Factors that can Increase Your Infertility Risk

Generally, researchers note that the risk of developing infertility in women with sleep disorders increases with age. It is also escalated by other factors such as;

  • Smoking
  • Alcoholism
  • Stress
  • Obesity
  • Tight working schedules
  • Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • Unhealthy habits
  • Medical history

How To Deal With Sleep Disorders & Infertility ?

Cognitive behaviour therapy has been identified as the first line treatment approach for a sleep disorder like insomnia. In case up for any approach to infertility treatment in Punjab, a woman should disclose any sleep difficulty she is facing or its history. This is highly important for the fertility expert to determine the effective treatment technique before planning the infertility treatment course.

It should also be noted that treating sleep disorders first at an IVF centre in India is considered as an effective way of boosting the IVF success chances. Improving personal habits while undergoing infertility treatment can also reduce the sleep disorder’s effects on your conception chances.
